Estimated time
20 learning hours
Audience
Advisors, programme managers, fund focal points and internal review teams.
Prerequisite
Experience reviewing or preparing climate projects.

Learning outcomes

  • Run a structured readiness review.
  • Distinguish issues that prevent submission from gaps that can be resolved during preparation.
  • Write an evidence-based review without inventing certainty.
  • Present a prioritised action plan to the project team.

Sample lessons

Modules

Four modules, open to read.

Sample lessons

Each sample lesson introduces a concept, explains its role in project preparation and sets an applied exercise. Use the knowledge check to test the reasoning, then record how the concept applies to a real or hypothetical project.

Module 1

Review mandate and independence

Agree the review purpose, scope and evidence available before scoring the project. Identify conflicts and the authority to make recommendations. State which documents were examined and which questions fall outside the review. This allows readers to distinguish a documented finding from a matter requiring specialist assessment.

Exercise

Write a one-page review mandate and conflict statement.

Knowledge check

Can a reviewer guarantee approval?

Show the answer

No. A reviewer can assess preparation and identify gaps. Approval remains with the responsible funding institution.

Module 2

Criterion and evidence testing

Test the quality, relevance and consistency of the evidence supporting a claim. Distinguish missing information, weak evidence and contradictory assumptions. Record the consequence for the project and the action needed; the clarity of the writing is a separate question from the strength of its basis.

Exercise

Review a sample section and classify ten findings.

Knowledge check

A polished narrative with no source should score highly. True or false?

Show the answer

False. Clear writing helps communicate a case but cannot substitute for relevant evidence. Record the unsupported claim and the information needed.

Module 3

Critical gates and sequencing

Some issues can prevent a project from using the proposed funding option: an ineligible applicant, absent authority or an unresolved prohibited activity. Others can be addressed through studies or revisions. Rank findings by their consequence and identify dependencies before setting the work plan.

Exercise

Build a critical-gate decision tree for the case.

Knowledge check

Should a critical gate be averaged away by strong minor sections?

Show the answer

No. A material access or legal issue must be resolved on its own terms; a high score elsewhere does not remove it.

Module 4

Reporting and management briefing

Present the recommended next decision, its supporting findings and any conditions. The action plan should specify responsibility, sequence and completion evidence. Distinguish proceeding to further preparation from being ready for submission; a single overall score should not conceal that difference.

Exercise

Deliver a five-minute decision brief and answer challenge questions.

Knowledge check

What belongs first in the brief?

Show the answer

Begin with the decision requested and the findings that support it. Follow with conditions, responsibilities and the work needed next.

Tools and assessment

Practice materials and planned assessment.

Downloads

Download the course workbook. Each worksheet includes an example row and marked cells for your own project.

  • Review mandate
  • Criterion matrix
  • Finding log
  • Gate tree
  • Management-brief template

Assessment and certificate

A practical project task and a source-based knowledge check are planned. Assessment criteria, marking, feedback and any reassessment will be explained before enrolment. No assessment or tutor feedback is provided through these sample pages.

A completion record would document the course and assessment completed. It would not confer professional accreditation, endorsement by a fund or permission to submit a funding application.
